We were again blessed with good weather for the annual Friends of Shannon Court Charity Golf Day at Betchworth Park Golf Club on 13 May. After last year’s fantastic effort it was always going to be difficult to maintain that standard, particularly in these pressing times. Nevertheless, we raised almost £3,000 which will go a long way to making the residents of Shannon Court more comfortable.
A total of 92 players made up 23 teams and a thoroughly enjoyable day was had by all. Unfortunately, notable absentees were any ladies teams playing but hopefully we will see them join us next year.
Yet again the results were of a very high order, the individual winner was Peter Huffer (again!) with 39 points on a handicap of 7, closely followed by Jack Love, also with 39 points, who came second on a count-back. The leading (only!) lady was again Mrs Jackie Newey. The winning team of Jack Love, Julian Lewer, Nick Foster and Roger Curtis amassed 124 points and have vowed to return and defend the trophy next year; second were Lezza’s Lads (again) with 104 points – third time lucky, Les?
On this occasion we were pleased to welcome Denis Vine, Deputy President of the RMBI Board of Trustees and his wife Ann to present the prizes. Although they played they were unable to participate in the competition but have promised to return next year with a full team from Godalming.
Next year the Golf Day is one week later – Thursday 19 May, again at Betchworth Park, to whom our thanks are due for their help and organisation in running what is becoming the premier Masonic golf event in the Province of Surrey.
